What's driving the move

ETH's drop below $1,900 is not an isolated event — it is the result of several converging factors that are systematically weakening the bulls' grip.

Macro backdrop and risk-off sentiment

Broad risk aversion is dominating the market in mid-August 2026. With the Fear & Greed Index at 34/100 and Bitcoin at $63,100 — well below this year's highs — capital is in defensive mode. Rate markets remain tight, and dollar strength is weighing on risk assets broadly. Crypto is not immune.

The Dencun upgrade paradox

The Ethereum Dencun upgrade (activated March 2024, epoch 269568) introduced EIP-4844 ("proto-danksharding") and reduced transaction fees on Layer 2 networks by 80–99%, according to data from network analysts. Optimism transactions cost less than one-tenth of a cent immediately after the upgrade — a thousandfold reduction. This is technically impressive, but carries an unintended side effect: dramatically lower ETH burning. According to CryptoQuant, ETH supply is now growing at its fastest daily rate since The Merge, undermining the "ultra-sound money" narrative that has long been a central driver of ETH valuation. With fewer fees burned and rising supply, the deflationary argument for ETH is fundamentally weakened in the current low-activity regime.

Liquidity and trading volume

Trading activity is subdued. Thin order books mean that even moderate selling pressure can push the price through support levels without encountering meaningful resistance. Spreads in ETH/USD pairs have widened, and market depth on major exchanges confirms the absence of aggressive buying interest around the $1,880–$1,900 zone.

Competition intensifies

Solana processes up to 65,000 TPS at fees below $0.01 and had over 2 million daily active wallets in Q1 2025, with TVL >$5B in DeFi — second only to Ethereum (source: Solana Foundation). Arbitrum, Ethereum's own flagship Layer 2, holds $13B in TVL and over 300 dApps, and Arbitrum Stylus (launched March 2025) allows developers to write contracts in Rust and C++ with potentially 10–100x lower execution costs. The paradox is real: Ethereum's own L2 solutions are channeling activity away from mainnet, further reducing ETH burning.

The Dencun upgrade saved L2 users — but it is costing Ethereum its deflationary identity.

Altcoin overview

ETH's weakness is spreading broadly across the altcoin market, which historically tracks ETH closely in risk-off regimes.

Solana (SOL): Holding up relatively better than ETH, buoyed by strong narrative around throughput and the upcoming Firedancer validator, which the Solana Foundation says will reduce network downtime by 90%. SOL is nonetheless not immune to the general selling pressure.

Arbitrum (ARB): Fundamentally strong with $13B in TVL, but the token price is struggling in line with Ethereum's weakness, as ARB valuation is closely tied to the health of the ETH ecosystem.

Cardano (ADA): Still marginal in a DeFi context despite the Alonzo upgrade and support for Plutus and Aiken. Cardano's rigorous, research-driven approach lends credibility, but the pace of adoption remains limited compared to Solana and Arbitrum.

Avalanche (AVAX): Approximately $1.6B in TVL as of Q1 2026 (per DeFiLlama estimates). The Etna upgrade in December 2024 cut C-Chain base fees and introduced sovereign Avalanche L1s — institutions including JPMorgan Onyx and Citi are testing the infrastructure. Under price pressure.

NEAR Protocol: Positioning itself as the "Operating Layer for AI" with 1.2-second finality and 1 million TPS scalability. The AI narrative is compelling, but has yet to be meaningfully priced in.

Ethereum is losing ground in the DeFi TVL race — Arbitrum alone is approaching half of Ethereum's mainnet activity.

Technical picture

Support and resistance:

  • $1,880: Current trading range — thin support, no strong historical bid cluster
  • $1,900: Broken support — now acting as short-term resistance
  • $1,750–$1,780: Next meaningful support zone based on volume profile from early 2024
  • $2,000: Psychological and technical resistance — requires a significant catalyst to reclaim
  • $2,150–$2,200: Stronger structural resistance at the previous consolidation zone

Technical indicators:

  • RSI (daily): Estimated in the 35–40 range — approaching oversold, but no divergence confirming a reversal
  • MACD: Bearish crossover on the daily chart confirms momentum deterioration
  • Volume profile: Thin trading volume in the $1,850–$1,950 zone means low resistance to further downside
  • Structural break: Short-term lower highs and lower lows are established — a classic bearish structure
ETH breaks short-term structure below $1,900 — technically, the next clear support is not visible until $1,750.

A bounce toward $1,920–$1,950 is possible on short-covering, but without volume confirmation this represents a selling opportunity, not a reversal signal. For a credible $2,000 scenario, the market needs a combination of: increased ETH burning (higher network activity), improved macro sentiment, and a concrete positive catalyst (ETF flows, a protocol upgrade, or institutional demand).

What to watch

Price levels:

  • $1,900: Must be reclaimed and held above for multiple daily closes to change the short-term picture
  • $1,850: Critical floor — a break here opens the door to a test of $1,750
  • $2,000: Reversal confirmation requires a close above this level on volume

Upcoming catalysts and events:

  • Macro data: U.S. inflation prints (CPI) and Fed signals will set the tone for risk appetite broadly. Any "higher for longer" rhetoric is negative for crypto.
  • ETH burn rate: Monitor daily ETH burning via Ultrasound.money or Glassnode — a meaningful increase in network activity is needed to strengthen the deflationary case.
  • Ethereum network activity: Increased DeFi volume and Layer 2 activity driving mainnet demand is a bullish signal.
  • Solana Alpenglow update: Scheduled for Q1 2026 — 150ms finality could potentially accelerate SOL's competition against ETH further.
  • Institutional ETH flows: Tracking spot ETH ETF flows (where approved) is relevant for assessing the institutional demand side.
  • Bitcoin dominance: If BTC dominance continues to rise, altcoins including ETH will likely underperform.
The question is no longer whether $2,000 is possible — it is what catalyst could justify it in a market that is actively repricing ETH's value proposition.
